ARMY
RECRUITING POINT (Located in various dungeon courtyards)
I
walked into an Army Recruit Point. I have entered a recruiting station in which
a sergeant tries to get adventurers to join the army as reserves. People come
and go, some carrying ther 'King's Coin' which symbolises army membership. It
is possible to join the army here as a reserve. Soldiers tend to be very tough
because of the special training they receive, but they can be called up in
times of war and the army can apply military discipline to them: woe be to the
reserve soldier who disobeys an order! Use the order 'L 2 0' to find out more
about the army and how to join.
I look
around. I am in a small recruiting station built within the courtyard. Here, it
is possible to join the army as a reserve. Soldiers get special training which
can drastically increase their health. Adventurers who join the army do so as
reserves. They can carry on their normal adventuring careers, but may be called
up in time of war or emergency. When not on active duty, soldiers are still
subject to military discipline, but only a general or the King has authority
over them. In war time, they are subject to the full chain of command and have
to obey a superior officer. If an adventurer chooses to join the army he does
so as a private, but may advance through the ranks. This is a 'recommended'
rank and has no real meaning when not on active duty. When and if they are
called to service, this will be the rank they would normally serve as, though
the military can decide to have them serve as a different rank if they so wish,
since it is only a recommended rank. Joining the army as a private may only be
done at a recruiting station and uses the order 'L 10 0'. It costs 200
experience to attain this rank: the army wants no inexperienced lightweights as
members, only experienced adventurers. Advancing in the ranks costs experience.
You do not need to be at a recruiting station to advance in rank. The ranks
within the Bereny army are listed below. Next to them is the cost in exp to
advance to that rank and the order you must issue to advance to that rank. In
order to achieve a new rank, you must have already attained the previous rank,
of course.
GMs
Note: an
enlisted army reserve can have their rank as part of their name if they want
to. A message to your GM will have your name changed to reflect your rank, but
you do not HAVE to do so.
Private,
200 exp, 'L 10 0’ at a recruiting station only. Player Notes: Players
report that upon enlisting, your character receives a King’s Coin in their
backpack and +5 health. Whether the health is a result of having the coin or
having the rank is unknown.
Corporal, 600 exp, 'X 1754 0' Player’s
Note: Players report that upon obtaining the rank of corporal, the
character gains +5 more health, for a total bonus to health from Army Reserve
Membership of +10.
Sergeant,

Sergeant
Major, 2400 exp, 'X 1756 0'

Brigadier,

Colonel,
50000 exp, 'X 1760 0'
I
spoke with the recruiting sergeant, signed some papers and took the 'Kings Coin'
as a mark of my acceptance of military discipline. I am now a private in the
army! GMs Note: If you want 'Private' placed as the beginning of your
character name, a note to your GM will achieve this. However, no name can be
longer than 20 characters, including the rank. In Bereny, the abbreviation of
Private is 'pvt', which is what will be put before your name if you choose.
BARBARIAN
LONGHOUSE (Located in various dungeon courtyards)
L 0
0
I take a look
inside the barbarian long house, pushing aside the great wolf fur that hangs
over the door. Inside all is very smoky: a fire burns in the middle of the
single huge room that fills the building, and there is no chimney, so the air
is thick with smoke. Animal pelts of various kinds decorate the walls. The only
inhabitant is a single old man, sat cross legged before the fire. He sits on a
pile of furs and there are various leather bags scattered around him. The man
regards me impassively and says nothing. To approach and talk to him, use 'L
2'.
I
approached the old man, my eyes watering from the smoke filling the room. He is
a skinny fellow and covered from head to foot with tatooes, some showing the
snarling faces of animals: wolves, bears, birds of various kinds, even a wyrm!.
He spoke to me before I could say anything: "I am a Godi, a shaman, of the
glacier. I come here to guide those of my people who have travelled into the
KIngdom in the ways of their ancestors. Those who have the ritual tatooes of
the Wodesserain I can guide to greatness.....or their noble deaths. If you
think you are one such, I may place your feet on the path to greatness.
It is
possible to ask the Godi for a 'spirit quest' if one has Wosserain Tatooes. You
should accept this the next turn and not turn it down: your standing will drop
until you do. You may not be on any other kind of mission. To apply for a
spirit quest use the order 'L 999' while standing in the longhouse square. If
you like the mission you are offered you can accept it using the order 'L 99' on
the following turn, but turning it down can greatly offend the spirits. Until
you have issued the order 'L 99' you are not actually on the quest, so you
should accept it straight away, on the same turn. If you do not, the spirits
may be offended.
Note: the
terms 'mission', 'spirit quest' and 'quest' are interchangable. Once you have
completed a quest you must return to the Longhouse where the mission was given
and declare it complete. You will then be given whatever reward you were
offered. Each quest has a specific order you must issue to complete it, which
you are told when you are given it in the first place. Make a careful note of
that order, because if you forget it or lose it for any reason you can never
claim the quest complete. (In this instance, a letter to your GM will get you
some help, but your character will lose 100 GPs as a 'paperwork' fee from the
Mission House.) You can ONLY be on ONE mission or quest at a time. if you try
to join extra missions or quests you will not be allowed to do so . If a quest
ever becomes impossible to complete for any reason, you will be told that. If
you wish to drop a quest before completion you can issue the order 'L 99' again
at any time.
L
999 0 (Sample Mission)
I spoke with
the old Godi in the Longhouse, and asked him to set my feet on the path to
greatness.....I approached the Godi. "Welcome, young one," he said
"I shall place you on the path to greatness, if you but ask me to. Beware
though, it is not for ther faint hearted and many who try fall in the attempt.
Also, you must remember that you may use NO magic or other means to move you
from place to place, other than that which I give you or tell you to use. If
you do, the spirits will be offended and they will not allow your quest to be
complete. Also, you must tell none of the tasks you perform, or any rewards
will be stripped from you." If you wish to accept this mission use the
order 'L 99' while standing on this square and before you have been offered any
other missions. The completion order for this mission, which must be issued
here, is 'L 127 100' (use three order boxes)
L

I
nodded to the the Godi to show my acceptance of his offer. From a bag by his
side he took an old, carved wolf fang. "Those who offend Volsun by slaying
those wolves who follow him are condemned to live as wolves in dark, icey
caverns, always hungry and hunted by the faithful. One such is Trevale of
Lionel(2729), whom you must slay. Use this fang to travel to the caverns of the
wolves, cutting yourself with it on cheek and breast to do so. Slay one I have
told you of and offer your respects at the wolf shrine to return here. Use no
magic to teleport while on this quest, or you will fail and do not leave the
caverns until your enemy is dead. Go now."
Player’s
Note: Normal
buy and sell functions do not work in this square.
Assertively,
I moved into a Bookseller. A small bookseller has set up here in the courtyard.
Issue the order L 2 for further information.
A
small bookseller has set up shop in the courtyard. The sign above the door
reads 'Lobert Wren's Esoteric Volumes'. Within, I found shop contains very few
volumes, all copied by hand. I spoke to the bookseller, who explained that he
is not the owner 'Lobert Wren', for he lives in Poldoon and is opening a number
of these stores to provide valuable lore to the Berenian adventurer. Mr Wren is
apparently even now searching for more esoteric volumes of forgotten lore to
sell in his store. The first two books on sale are both of use to alchemists.
One is a Book of Lore containing details of how to make charms. This book costs
200 gold (use buy code 1682). The second deals with the manufacture of
animates, sometimes called golems. This book is 400 gold (use buy code 3071).
BOUNTY
OFFICES (Located in various dungeon courtyards)
I
stepped into Bounty Offices, ready for anything. These are the bounty offices
of the Royal Courts of Bereny. Here, the current ten most wanted list can be
viewed (L 10) and bounties can be claimed when listed criminals are brought to
justice.
The
Ten Most Wanted criminals in Bereny are:-
#10 :
Dormigan Rayguile, Male Human Rogue, For Murder Most Foul. Reward: 1000 GPs.

I
moved cautiously into a Dojo. The area here is filled with soft mats and
strange wooden training devices. It appears to be a hall for the training of
martial arts.
I Look
Around. I am standing in a Dojo, which is a hall designed for the training of
the martial arts by Monks. The floor here is covered by soft white mats.
Against the walls stand various wooden constructions made to be struck with the
hands and feet in a variety of ways aimed at improving skills. As I gaze about
the area a spectral force appears in the air before me. “Welcome. If you are a
Monk you may train here and learn the skills of Quivering Palm and Iron Fist
from the spirits of dead masters. However, you must be of sufficient skill,
experience and wealth to study here. The Spirits of Dead Masters do not rise
for free.”
GMs
Note: Use the
orders shown in the rulebook if you are a monk and wish to train here. Stat
levels, XP and Gold costs all shown in the rulebook apply.
EBON
MONOLITH
Hell’s

Pits

Pits
of Poldoon, Sewers
Dungeon
of Drax, Level 2 (Destroyed)
I look around. Within this area is a great black monolith, which is
encrusted with weird runes and glyphs which seem to swirl and change as I
examine them. These monoliths have put in periodic appearances in Bereny's
history: they are used by the minions of the dark god Ebon, the Keeper of
Impossible secrets, to travel from their cold halls into the real world. It is
known also how they can be destroyed: holy water poured on such a monolith will
wreck it, though there are often repercussions as a result of such destruction
and a 'weak spot' will still exist where the lesser minions of Ebon will be
able to pass....in the way of such
things, however, the destruction of the monolith would prevent the more potent
followers from getting through. To pour holy water on the monolith (which you
must have and will use it up) use the order 'L 10'.
L 10 0
I unstoppered the vial of holy water and splashed the contents over the great Ebon monolith. As I did so, the stone began to hiss and dark smoke issued from it. The monolith started to melt before my eyes but, as it did so, the glyphs upon it pulsed and began to glow. The monolith slowly reduced itself to a pile of steaming black stone. That stone seemed to have a humanoid form and as I watched it stirred and moved. What was left of the monolith seems to have been animated as some sort of stone creature! It strode towards me, the ground trembling as it did so. Behind it, all that was left of the monolith was a nasty black scorched area on the ground. (Adventurers report that when an Ebon Monolith is destroyed, it leaves behind a Blackened Area.)
FOUNDATION STONES
Player’s Notes: Foundation Stones, which appear to occur randomly on some dungeon levels as well as apparently being produced through use of the Foundation Stones skill, allow Teleport Home scrolls to function. You must stand on the Foundation Stone for the scroll to work. However, the Foundation Stone warps the Teleport Home scroll effect; a Teleport Home scroll used in Icehaunt normally returns the user to the courtyard stairs. Teleport Home scrolls used from a Foundation Stone in the Prison of Frozen Souls returned the users to random locations in the courtyard. In both observed instances, the teleport location was located within a short distance of the courtyard edge, some eight or nine squares from the stairs.
I went
into a Long House, travelling. A large wooden long house of a barbarian style
has been erected here. To take a look around inside, use the order 'L 1 0'
while standing on the Long House square.
Decisively,
I walked into Mastercraft Weapons. This weapon shop sells magical weapons of
the highest calibre. The generic order B will list those items for sale here
and their relevent prices and order codes.

MISSION
HOUSE (Located in some dungeon courtyard)
Description
1: A small
stone building has been erected in the courtyard here from which many folk seem
to be coming and going, including officers of the crown, army, Preceptors and
magistrums (those members of the church and Royal College of magic who deal
with secular matters). All these folk, and various independents as well, use
this location to hire adventurers for specific tasks within the dungeon... and
sometimes outside of it. For more details on how to apply for some sort of
mission use the order 'L 2' whilst standing in this square.
Description
2: Taking long
strides, I moved into Drax Missions Office. A squat grey building stood before
me, its slatted wooden door open wide. A sign on the wall read, "Missions
Office". This is a place where an adventurer can purchase missions
sponsored by the Crown or by rich merchants, trades people or those in
positions of power and wealth. If I issue the order 'L 2' while standing on
this square the current Missions Master on duty will choose a mission for me and
give it to me. I cannot apply for another mission while I am currently on a
mission, but I can resign from the mission if I decide that for some reason I
do not wish to pursue that goal.
Mission
houses are fast-moving and busy places. They receive warrants and commisions to
grant to adventurers and suchlike from the Crown, the Church, the Military,
plus a number of independent bodies. There are no 'brochures' to persue for
missions, you get offered what they have available. To apply for a mission use
the order 'L 999' while standing in the mission house square. If you like the
mission you are offered you can accept it using the order 'L 99' on the
following turn. Until you have issued the order 'L 99' you are not actually on
the mission, so there is no need to do anything if you do not like the mission
you are offered. If you try and do more than one 'L 999' order on the same turn
only the LAST mission you were offered will apply (so its really not worth
doing more than one per turn.) You can keep issuing one 'L 999' order per turn
until you find one you like, but this is a slow process. The best bet is
usually to give the first mission offered a try. Once you have completed a
mission you can return to the Mission House where the mission was given and
declare it complete. You will then be given whatever reward you were offered.
Each mission has a specific order you must issue to complete the mission, which
you are told when you are given the mission in the first place. Make a careful
note of that order, because if you forget it or lose it for any reason you can
never claim the mission complete. (In this instance, a letter to your GM will
get you some help, but your character will lose 100GPs as a 'paperwork' fee
from the Mission House.) You can ONLY be on ONE mission at a time. If you try
to join extra missions you will not be allowed to do so until the first mission
is complete. If a mission ever becomes impossible to complete for any reason,
you will be told that. If you wish to drop a mission before completion you can
issue the order 'L 99 0' again at any time.
L
999 0 (Sample Mission)
I
asked for a mission.
Mission:
Old deed Recovery.
Patron:
The Crown Commission.
Reward:
50GP and 50XP.
I
spoke with the local Crown Commissioner, who offered me a job: 'Over the years
numerous old deeds, giving to nobles title to land, have been stolen or
vanished. We believe there are several in this dungeon and want them back so we
can rationalise who owns what land. We will pay you for such a deed.' If you
wish to accept this mission use the order 'L 99' while standing on this square
and before you have been offered any other missions. The completetion order for
this mission, which must be issued here, is 'L 92 60' (use three order boxes).
I
spoke with the commissioner and agreed to seek out and find some of the missing
deeds. He indicated that the matter was far from urgent.
I
spoke with the Crown Commissioner and handed over the deeds. He seemed pleased,
though not excited and paid me my money. 50 XP received. Player’s Note: Crown
Favor +5, Fame +2.
I
asked for a mission.
Mission:
Recover Missing Altar Cloths.
Patron:
The Church.
Reward:
75 XP. I spoke with the Preceptor, the local priest who is in charge of mission
hiring: 'Over the years many church altar cloths have been stolen and rumor has
it there are several within this dungeon. You would be favored by the Gods if
you could return one of these to me here." If you wish to accept this
mission use the order 'L 99' while standing on this square and before you have
been offered any other missions. The completion order for this mission, which
must be issued here, is 'L 92 61' (use three order boxes)
L
99 0 (Sample Mission Accepted)
I
spoke to the Preceptor once more: 'The gods go with you, ' he said 'it is not
fitting that these sanctified cloths should be in evil hands.'
I
handed the altar cloth to the Preceptor. ‘Well done, my son,' he said ' the
blessings of the gods be upon you.’ 75 XP received. Player’s Note: The
character also received 2 points of piety, 5 points of church favor, and 2
points of fame.
I
asked for a mission.
Mission:
Recover Midnight elf Scrolls.
Patron:
The Royal College of Magic.
Reward
60GP and 60 XP.
I
spoke with the local Magistrum, who hires adventurers for the Royal College.
'Midnight elves sometimes carry scrolls, personal to them, which we are
interested in. We will pay you to recover one.' If you wish to accept this
mission use the order 'L 99' while standing on this square and before you have
been offered any other missions. The completion order for this mission, which
must be issued here, is 'L 92 64' (use three order boxes)
I told
the Magistrum that I would try and recover a Midnight elf scroll for him.
I
asked for a mission.
Mission:
Ancient Trophy Shield
Patron:
The Bereny Army
Reward:
a shield +5 and 200 XP.
I
spoke with the local Bereny army officer, who explained that over the years
various Trophy Shields have been awarded to soldiers. Some of these were given
to Drax's troops and are still in the dungeon. He wishes me to recover one.' If
you wish to accept this mission use the order 'L 99' while standing on this
square and before you have been offered any other missions. The completion
order for this mission, which must be issued here, is 'L 196 81' (use three order
boxes).
I told
the officer that I would hunt out a shield for him. 'Good,' he said ' I think
you may find it in the drill room, which is to the east and a little south from
the courtyard.' Player’s Note: This mission appears native to the Dungeon of
Drax.
I
handed the trophy shield to the officer. 'Well done,' he said. 'it is sad when
these things are not in their rightful place. I will have your new shield dug out
for you.'
200 xp
awarded.
I
asked for a mission.
Mission:
Recover Research Notes.
Patron:
The Royal College of Magic.
Reward:
50 XP and 50 gold.

I Look Around.
I am standing in a temple. The floor is finely polished cedar, while the walls
are blackened with charcoal and soot. On one wall stands a stone altar, etched
with the faces of one hundred and one screaming victims. The ceiling is painted
red, with a single word scrawled across it in uneven letters of an even darker
crimson hue. “Minh.“ It is the name of one of the 947 dark gods. The Evil Ones.
Issue the order 'L 2' to find out what else you remember about the god known as
Minh. To examine the altar use the order 'L 3'.
I thought back
over what I knew about the god Minh. I had heard the story but for the life of
me I couldn't remember it. It was something to do with a big battle. I think he
was the god of smoke or flame or something like that. I wish I could remember.
I thought back
over what I knew about the god Minh. Legend has it that Minh was one of the
lesser gods, part human, part deity, who came out of the Time of Power as
little more than a demon to fight the Gods of Light. When the Evil Ones lost
the battle and were banished, Minh refused to retreat or give in. It was clear
that he was going to lose the final conflict with Cambron, but rather than be
defeated or retreat he sacrificed his own life by diving into one of the great
furnaces of creation. Little is known of the events that happened after that,
except that somehow Minh survived the suicidal ordeal and reappeared stronger
and more powerful than ever, as the evil God of Fire and Heat. Worship of Minh,
as an evil god, is illegal in the Kingdom of Bereny.
I took a close
look at the altar. It was a stone table, slightly higher than my waist, that
must have weighed several tons. It was perfectly smooth and flat on top, marked
in several places with old dark stains. Evil acts must have been practised
here. The front of the altar was decorated with screaming faces and the visage
of several monstrous demons. I had no doubt that this was a dark place indeed.

Following my
path, I trudged into a Temple of Yain.
L 0 0
This area is
dedicated to the worship of the demon Yain, who is a feared and loathed demon
throughout Bereny. Yain brings madness to animals and he is best to know for
corrupting the boar and unicorns of the Royal Hunting preserve in Home Ward.
The walls of this area are covered with pictures of snarling animals, all of
them warped in some way, all of them angry, hostile an devil. Boar are the main
creatures who serve Yain and their maligant piggy eyes stare down at me from
all around. Against one wall stands an altar with a statue of Yain upon it. To
examine the altar use the order 'L 2', to take a closer look at the pictures
use the order 'L 3'.
L 2 0
I took a look
at the Yain altar. It is a plan piece of dark stone carved with pictures of
snarling animal heads. On the altar stands a statue of Yain, a humanoid figure
with the head of a boar, a left arm that is a snake, a right arm that is a crab
pincer, cloven hooves and a huge mane. Statue and altar are covered in marks,
as if attempts have been made over the years to damage them. The stone of the
altar is encrusted with old, dried blood. To try and smash up the altar use the
order 'L 20', to pray to Yain use 'L 30'.
L 3 0
I took a
closer look at the murals. They seem to depict a huge variety of animals......
mostly boar, horses, stags and similar types, but also a few snakes and large
crabs. All these animals look to be mad and many are warped, combining features
of more than one creature. Also in the pictures I could see a number of
midnight elves, who seemed to have mastery over the beasts. Here and there I
can see a unicorn, either bleeding in the dirt or looking to have been tainted
by darkness. These murals are really very well done, and very disturbing, drawn
in bright, lurid colors they look like a bad nightmare. Worked into them I can
see a stone archway, which seems to have a cloak of darkness over it. This does
not look painted. To further examine the archway use the order 'L 40'.
L 20 0
Bracing
myself, I hit the altar as hard as I could, hoping to smash this sacrilegious
thing. My assault bounced off, leaving only the faintest of
marks, and the
eyes of the statue above the altar burned red. I was hurled back across the
room and fell over in a heap (1 health lost). (Player's Note: This was
attempted by a Female Human Priest with a strength of 13 and a Piety of 180. A
subsequent try was conducted by the same Female Human priest with Strength 14
and 234 Piety after lighting a blessed candle.)
L 30 0
I knelt to
pray at the altar of Yain, hoping that the demon lord would help me with power
and might. I expected some sort of response, either for him to curse me, or
strike me with some horrible affliction or for him to grant me some power, but
he ignored me completely. (Player's Note: This was attempted by an Elven
Warrior Maiden with a Piety of 0. Not changes in statistics were noted.)
L 40 0
I took a close
look at what I thought at first to be a picture of a stone archway, worked into
the rest of the mural. That part of the picture depicts a forest clearing with
a stone archway within it. Across the 'hollow' of the arch is what looks to be
a cloak of darkness. It feels very cold when I draw close to it and almost
seems to beckon me in. Though the archway in the drawing is only a few feet
high I feel certain I could pass through it ... but it is very cold and looks
most forbidding. To brace yourself and pass through the archway...... to
wherever it may go, use the order 'L 103 0'.
Player’s Note:
Three blessed candles have been lit within the Temple of Yain in Central
Dungeon with no effect other than the standard candle lighting string.
L 103 0
I reached one
tentative hand towards the archway. It sucked me in. I felt as if I fell
forever through darkness, a deep cold penetrating my bones. I blacked out. When
I came to, I was in some sort of forest clearing. (5 health lost) Players Note:

you to the Midnight Arch in the middle of Hunting Wood, south of Central

I am
standing in a chapel. It's a large room, a good 50ft x 30ft with a high domes
roof, entirely lit by many hunderds of candles flickering on racks around the
walls. The floor is littered with cushions, mostly old and mouldy, which
indicate that this must have been a chapel of the type favoured by those from
the Westlands, where prayer is conducted onthe knees in church. There is no
altar, just a pile of old rotten wood where the altar must have been. Its a sad
way for a chapel to end up, but I wonder why somebody ever saw fit to build a
place of worship in a dungeon anyway? Perhaps this place was once used for
grander things. To take a closer look at the smashed altar use the order 'L 2'.
To examine the candles use the order 'L 3'. To kneel on a cushion and pray use
the order 'L 4'.
I
peered at the wooden remnants of the old altar. Somebody had done a real job on
it. It looked like an axe had been taken to it for quite some time, since the
wood was utterly sundered and completely irrepairable. Not a lover of the
church obviously.
I
peered into one of the shelves that contained the many flickering candles. Some
had gone out but most were still alight. I guessed that the Kings Guard came
into this area from the courtyard and kept them alight as a service to
adventurers still close to the dungeon entrance. Well, by the looks of the
other exits its the last pleasant light I'll see in this dismal place.
Mirrormane is not known for its welcoming ambience.
L 3
0 (Central)
I
looked at the hundreds of candles. There are many sizes here but all are white.
It is strange however that none of them seem to be dripping wax from where they
are burning. Picking one up I examined it and to my astonishment the flame went
out leaving no trace of any burning, even the wax was cold. To take a candle
issue the order 'L 6'.
I knelt on one of the old soft cusions. Being in a Dungeon it was damp and squelched under my knees. Small fat yellow bugs scurried out of the material for darker areas of the room. A nasty smell wafted up. I said a quick prayer and jumped back to my feet. Not a nice place to rest.
