I journeyed into an alchemy
supply shop. I have entered a small shop selling basic alchemy supplies.
The cluttered alchemy shop sells a variety of alchemical supplies, many of which can be bought at higher prices from normal traders if one knows what to ask for. The following is for sale (the numbers in brackets are the number needed to follow the ‘B’ order to buy them). Silver Grindings (1058) at 90gold, Fine Wax (1061) at 18 gold, Gold Grindings (1063) at 185 gold, Lead Grindings (1065), Copper Grindings (1068), Tin Grindings (1070), all at 25 gold each, bags of charcoal (1207) at 8 gold and athanor (1206) for 700gold.
I moved in into Allotments. I
have entered a small area of allotments.
I am in a small area of
allotments. The area is divided into small gardens where the locals grow
vegetables, mostly for their own consumption. Sheds stand around the outside of
the area and, form some of these, the locals sell their produce. Rations can be
bought here using buy code 124 for only 2 gold.
I paced into a Bakery, my
gaze intent on all around me. The smell of freshly baked bread and a waft of
warm air greeted me as I entered the bakery.
I took a look around the
bakery. The place bakes its own bread, and sells bread, pies and pastries, as
well in several varieties of loaf. Yesterday's bread makes excellent rations
and is sold off cheaply: Slightly stake, it will keep well. Use the order 'B 124
0' to buy day old bread to use as rations at 2 gold per rations. Use the order
'L 1 0' if you wish to talk to the baker. Use the order 'L 2 0' to have a
closer look around the shop.
Player Notes: Rations (B 124) may be purchased at the Bakery, for 2g
per ration (10g for 5 rations).
I spoke to the baker. He
seemed a friendly fellow, happy to talk to a widely travelled adventurer type
such as myself. He showed me around his shop, both the front part, which
customers see where the bread is sold, and the bake part where the huge bread
ovens are in constant use. Bread is in huge demand in the city and the bakers
does a roaring trade. The flour he uses in his trade is mostly imported (the
wheat is grown in home ward mostly) and he buys from the local Victualler's
Guild, which buys such goods from trader's who call at the city. As we chatted
the smell of braked bread had me salivating.
I had a good look around the
bakers. Nobody seemed to mind. The shop is split into two parts, the front
displays bread for customers, the back holds huge ovens which are constantly in
use. Customers and delivery boys come and go all the time: a lot of customers
have their bread delivered. First thing in the morning the place is extremely
busy, and the bakers stay up all night baking. The bakery buys its flour from
the local Victualler's guild.
I bought 1 x rations portion
for 2 GPs.
I tried to buy something that
wasn't for sale here.
I tried to buy something that
wasn't for sale here.
Player's Note: Despite the players note above indicating that 5
loaves cost 10gp, attempts to buy rations in bulk using the 'B 319 0' and 'B
320 0' orders failed.)
I moved as quickly as
possible, into a Bodger. I entered the workroom of the local bodger. The smell
of wood chips and polish assailed me.
I took a look around the
Bodger's. A bodger uses a very simple lathe, pedal operated, to turn simple
wooden articles, mostly bowls. In the countryside a sapling is used to power
the lathe: it is bent over so it pulls against the spindle of the lathe, the
foot pedal being used to pull down again, thus turning the lathe first one way
and then the next. Here, in town, a supple willow pole replaces the sapling.
Bodgers are skilled craftsmen, and the turned wooden bowls they make are in
great demand. A wooden bowl can be purchased here for 2 gold (item 895). If you
have any rare woods, the bodger may be able to make them into something
special. To show him the wood, give the order 'L' with the item number of the wood
(gained from investigating the wood) in the second order slot.
Wooden Bowl (895)
I took a look at the simple
wooden bowl. It is fairly well made, though turned on a fairly primitive lathe,
I think. Still, it is serviceable. No per backpack slot: 12
Bowyer
M ? 0
I stepped into a Bowyers,
trying to stay silent. I have entered an elven owned bowyers.
I am standing in a bowyers
shop. Several bows and arrows hang on the walls, all elven made, though the
shelves and racks look depleted and empty. The proprietor, an elf, stands
mournfully behind the counter. To ask what is for sale here, use the order 'L 2
0'. To chat more generally with the elf, use 'L 5 0'.
The shop sells Elven Longbows
for 1000 gold ‘B 1581 0’, +5 longbows for 500 gold 'B 112 0', +5 shortbows for
400 gold 'B 111 0’. In addition it sells normal long bows for 25 gold 'B 22 0’
and normal short bows for 15 gold 'B 21 0'.
I bought 1 x Elven Longbow
for 1000 GPs.
I stepped into a Building. I
have entered a medium-sized dwelling. The walls are made of sandstone and the
roof of strong wood. It looks like a merchant's home, a house where members
of the merchant class live.
Traveling, I moved into a
Butchers. I entered a butcher's shop: various meats are on display, all packed
in ice.
I tried to speak to the
Master Butcher, but he was very busy and unable to make any time for me.
I took a better look around
the butcher's. Ice is delivered to it daily from the local ice house, a young
boy bringing it in on a cart. Every day the Master Butcher heads over to the
slaughterhouse and chooses carcasses, which are then brought back for his
apprentices to butcher into different value cuts. Sausages are made from the
leftovers. The most common meats are beef, goat, mutton and lamb. Game birds
are often sold here too, when in season. These are always left to hang for a
day or two before being sold.
I entered the candle maker's
shop, a vital building which provides lights for the town. Various types of
candles are on display and they are made in a back room.
I sold 12 x Lavender Buds for
a total price of 180.
Assertively, I moved into a
Cheap Tavern. I entered a cheap, bawdy tavern. Rowdy customers imbibe copious
quantities of cheap ale around me.
I take a closer look around
the cheap tavern. The customers here are rough, as is the beer, and fights are
far from infrequent. To have a couple of beers use the order 'L 5 0', at a cost
of one gold. To drink excessive amounts use the order 'L 10 0', at a cost of 5
gold.
I had a few drinks in the
tavern, which was relaxing, even in this rowdy atmosphere.
I journeyed into a Church. I
entered a church dedicated to the six gods of light. Issue the
order 'L 2 0' for more
information on the services available here.
This is the Church of the
Blessed Light. For a better look around then use the order 'L 2 0'.
I am standing in a city
church, which is dedicated to all six of the Gods of Light: there are small
altars to each here. The church offers some healing for free (use order 'L 5
0'). The friendly priests here sell mana bread (use the order 'B' '). Church
candles are often lit here by the devoted and such candles can be blessed for
the donation of 30 gold. Use the order 'L 10 0' to have such candles blessed.
To talk to the priests use the order 'L 20 0', to attend services use the order
'L 30 0', to make a 5 GP donation use the order 'L 40 0'. Finally, to pray to
the gods use the order 'L 50 0'.
I presented myself to the
priests and they prayed over me. My wounds glowed with a holy light and I was
healed (5 health regained).
I talked to the priests
within the small church. They were a helpful and friendly bunch. They indicated
that there is a spreading demonic infection in the land and many areas of
Bereny are being made unholy by the activities of various demons and devils.
This taint can sometimes be removed by burning a blessed candle in the area, an
action often rewarded by the Gods.
I attended church services,
which were very dull indeed.
I made a donation of 5 gold
to the church and was thanked for my kindness.
I prayed to the gods of light
that they might aid and guide me in my endeavors.
Player’s Note: The buy order for Mana Bread was missing. No report
has surfaced of this being corrected.
Keeping careful watch, I
walked into a Cobbler 's. I have entered a cobbler’s. Racks of shoes and boots
surround me and I can hear folk working away in a back room.
I took a look around the
cobbler's. There are few goods on display: the cobbler generally makes items to
order, Most of his trade is in shoe and boot repairs for the locals. Leather
boots (buy code 37) may be bought here for 4 gold. Fine Leather Boots (buy code
896) may be purchased for 15 gold. GM note: Use normal buy orders for
both kinds of boots.
Coppersmith's
I took careful steps into a
Coppersmith's. The smell of copper assailed my nostrils.
L 0 0
I took a look around the
coppersmith's. Mostly, the shop is filled with pots, bowls, and kettles of
various kinds, but it also makes some plain jewellery of a kind worn by the
lower orders. To take a closer look at what is for sale here, use the order 'L
1 0'. To speak with the coppersmith use the order 'L 2 0'.
I had a poke around the
coppersmith’s. Looking at his wares. A few things struck mea as interesting:
Copper Necklaces (893) are for sale for 10 gold, Copper Bracelets (894) for 15
gold. Various types of copper pots (897) sell at 2 gold each. Use normal buy
orders here to purchase any of these.
I spoke to the coppersmith.
Most of his trade is based on making pots, kettles and the like for locals,
though he makes some jewelry, He bemoaned the high price of copper in bulk,
which cuts down on his profitability. He said that he would be willing to buy
bulk shipments of copper (867) for 90 gold. He also bemoaned the lack of the
rare red copper. This can be made into rare and valuable jewelry. Red Copper
has not been mined for many years, but can still sometimes be found in the form
of discs or ingots. He would pay 40 gold for Red Copper Discs (898) and 100
gold for Red Copper Ingots (899).
I took cautious steps, moving
into a Crusader Prefectory. The imposing walls of the prefectory keep out all
who are not Crusaders.
I took a look at the
prefectory. Most cities hold one, and they are maintained by the church to
serve all six of the crusader orders. They are a place where Crusaders may
assemble, eat, rest, and generally ready themselves for their duties. Normally,
there are a number of shrines or temples nearby where worship can be conducted.
Human crusaders or priests may avail themselves of the food and lodgings here
using the ‘L 1 0’ order.
As a crusader, I was welcomed
into the prefectory and here, with my brothers and sisters, I was able to get a
good meal, relax and pray amongst friends and get some rest. Priests tended to
any wounds that I might have. 5 health healed. My prayers were well received,
although no shadow-creature was granted my by the Holy Light this time.
GMs note: The chance of success is about 25%.
Aware of possible dangers, I
trudged cautiously into a Dressmaker. I entered a dressmaker's shop: various
articles of female attire are on display.
I took a look around the
dressmaker's shop. It sells a variety of feminine attire (use the buy codes in
brackets to purchase) Shawl for 3 gold (1051), woollen skirt for 5 gold (1052),
cotton skirt for 10 gold (1053), Bodice for 5 gold (1054) and lace bodice for 10
gold (1055). A copy of the Book of Patterns can be bought here, of great use to
alchemists, for 50 gold using 'B 1107 0'.
I went into a Fishmonger’s. I
entered the fishmongers. Rows of fresh fit sit here, packed in ice.
I look around. The fishmonger
sells all sorts of fresh fish. Essentially, these can be used as rations,
costing 2gp each and using buy code 124. All the fish here are packed in ice to
keep them fresh.
I took careful steps into a
Flophouse. I have entered a flophouse: a run down building on which folk pay to
sleep on a cramped floor.
The flophouse is the cheapest
place to sleep in town for those without a home to go to. For one gold one can
crash out on a hard wooden floor under a rough blanket and get a bowl of thin
soup for breakfast. Use the order 'L 3' to sleep and eat.
I handed over a gold coin and
grabbed some troubled sleep in the corner of the flophouse. When I awoke, I
downed a bowl of thin and rather tastless soup.
Good House (Encountered only in Poldoon and Ghorst to date)
I walked into The Good House.
I appear to be in a small shop of some kind, but there's nothing for sale on
the shelves! Shady-looking characters are coming and going, talking in
whispers. Some people seem to pass things to each other. What is this place? To
take a closer look issue the order 'L 2 0'.
The closer I looked, the more
aggressive the patrons of the mysterious shop became. It seemed they were not willing to enlighten me as to what this
place was.
Traveling, I moved into a
Haunted House. I have entered a run down, dilapidated old house.
In the lands of Bereny some
places become tainted with evil and death. This is more common than one might expect
and when this happens to a city dwelling, if the priests of the city cannot
drive the taint away, it is boarded up and left well alone. The spooks that
inhabit the places usually have some power to conjure gold or items, tempting
the unwary into their dwelling place!
Step after step, I moved into
Learned Friends. This old and respectable house is the headquarters of the
League of Learned Friends, a little-known group of knowledge-seekers, sages, adventurers
and busybodies. Issue the order ‘L 199 0' if you have something to collect from
the league and can show the proper identification.
This old and respectable

group of knowledge-seekers, sages, adventurers and busybodies. Issue the order
‘L 199 0' if you have something to collect from the league and can show the
proper identification.
Market Place
L 0 0 (Crownheart)
I am on the streets of the
busy city of Crownheart, capital of Bereny. The city is dominated by the Royal
Palace. The streets are busy with officers of the crown and other officials, as
well as nobles, merchants, artisans and more common folk. Crownheart is a stone
built city, the architecture generally delicate and stately in nature.
I am standing in the City of
Poldoon, in Summer Ward. Ward. To enter any of the buildings I need only walk
onto the square. To leave the city issue the order 'L 2 0' while standing on
any of the three squares next to the City Gates.
Following my path, I trudged
into a Merchant's Home. I have entered a moderately sized dwelling, which is
fairly luxurious and richly appointed. Good quality furniture and wall hangings
adorn the place. This is the home of a moderately wealthy merchant, his family
and some of his factors.
L 0 0
I am standing in the home of
a moderately wealthy merchant. There are servants and apprentices around, busy
about their tasks.
I edged quietly into a Noble
Home. I have entered a richly appointed home, one belonging to a very wealthy
merchant, minor member of the nobility or landed gentry. The house is large and
houses the owner, their family and numerous servants.
I am standing in the richly
appointed home of one of the local nobility, or perhaps of a richer merchant
who controls the work of other merchants.
I took a few steps into a
Pottery. I entered a small potter's shop.
The pottery sells a variety
of pots. An earthernware pot can be bought here for 2 gold (buy code 994).
Earthernware Pot (994)
I took a look at the simple,
earthernware pot. Made of unfired clay, it is a simple thing, but serves. Not
equippable, 12 per backpack slot.
I made my way into a
Silversmith’s. I have entered a silversmith’s.
L 0 0
The silversmith sells simple
silver necklaces for 20 gold. Use the order 'B 1120 0'.
I went into a small bookshop,
traveling. I have entered a small bookshop.
L 0 0 (Jebollah)
I am on the busy streets of
Jebollah. Folk here tend to dress in bright colors, a result of the influence
of nearby Kyria. The architecture, too, reflects the tastes of that nation,
with many spires and minerettes. Everywhere there are bright, vibrant colors.
Keeping careful watch, I
walked into a Tailor. I entered a tailors shop. Racks of woollen clothing are
on sale, as well as more finely made cotton garments.
I looked around the tailor's
shop. They sell a variety of common woollen garments as well as some finer
cotton ones. The following items can be purchased (the buy codes are in
brackets): Woollen Cloak for 2 gold (code 36), woollen trews for five gold
(code 990), woollen shirt for five gold (code 988), woollen robe for ten gold
(code 989), cotton trews for 10 gold (code 991), cotton robe for fifteen gold
(code 992) and cotton shirt for ten gold (code 993). A copy of the Book of
Patterns can be bought here, of great use to alchemists, for 50 gold using 'B
1107 0'.
I stepped into A Vault,
trying to stay silent.
I Look Around. There's very
little to see here of any interest. I should explore further.
Victualler’s
L 0 0
I am at the city victualler's guild. This is currently shut as, in view of the plague, the guild is putting procedures in place to prevent the infection spreading. IT should re-open soon and deals with buying food for the city from traders only.
I took a few steps into a
Worker’s Home. I have entered a small dwelling. The walls are made of sandstone
and they are roofed with strong wood and slates. It looks like a worker's home
is a house where members of the working class live.
L 0 0
I took a look around the worker's home, which is rather rude of me. A sturdy and clean dwelling, it is a solid place to live, warm and dry, but boasts no pretension.
